Is it just me or are there some bad-ass DJs coming out of Miami?George Acosta @ Sugar Bar 05.31.08

George Acosta is no exception. Even though he’s been here a few times, he puts on a good show every time.

From the DJ List:

At the pinnacle of Miami’s dance scene lies a phenomenom that has been three years in the making. As we enter the new millennium, this club is at the forefront of the future in music. The club is none other than Shadow Lounge, Miami’s Trance Temple. The DJ is trance cowboy George Acosta, your guide to the trance elements of the future.

Known as the “Trance Conductor” he releases a charge of energy every week through the lounge’s mammoth sound system that shakes the earth and brings his followers to there knees. At present Shadow Lounge is considered by many europeans to be America’s most important link to the trance movement that has already overtaken Europe. America’s premier trance DJ brings you into his home. “When I play the Lounge I feel Like I am at home, I look down to the dance floor and I see my people, they understand me, they understand what is happening as I spin my records. Every time I step up to the turntables at Shadow Lounge it’s like the martix, I can’t describe what happens I just want it to stay”.

George sees the Shadow Lounge as a medium by which he can communicate peace and love to all as we enter the new millenium.

I saw Darude the first time he came to Columbus right after his hit single, “Sandstorm”, was released.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t impressed. I like his super trancey singles, but his mixing ability is greatly lacking. Who knows, maybe since then he has improved. Let’s cross our fingers.

Either way, it will be interesting to see his track selection and if he’s expanded a little past his ancient “Sandstorm” and “Feel the Beat” sound.

Wikipedia excerpt:

Darude is currently ranked #58 on the DJ List as of January 1, 2008[1] and #116 in the DJ Mag Top 100.[2]

Darude posted his singles Tell Me and My Game from his upcoming new album Label This! on his official MySpace page. Tell Me was released in Finland on April 11, 2007 and My Game on September 19, 2007.

The Finnish release date for Label This! was October 24, 2007.

And they do just that, go above and beyond.

I saw Above & Beyond at Bal En Blanc last year and they kicked butt for like four hours straight. I can’t wait to see them again in action.

Wikipedia excerpt:

Above & Beyond is a trance music group formed in 2000 by Jonathan “Jono” Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki. The group is famous for remixes and progressive trance productions. The group’s tracks are regularly played by well-known DJs, such as Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Paul van Dyk.

Josh Gabriel of Gabriel & Dresden is visiting Columbus for the first time as far as I know.

This is no ordinary show. This duo is known to play some of the largest events in the world. Granted it’s only one of the renowned duo DJ team, I think this will still be a sight to see.Josh Gabriel @ Sugar Bar 04.12.08

About Josh Gabriel from Wikipedia:

In 1988-89, a 20 year old exchange student from California Institute of the Arts, was living in The Hague in Holland and studying at the Institute of Sonology. Josh Gabriel had already been working with digital music since his high-school days, achieving mastery of the DX7 and TX816 by the age of 17. With an Apple Macintosh Plus, operating system 3, and the earliest of music applications like Mark of the Unicorn’s “Composer” and “Performer”, Josh was already at the bleeding edge.

In Holland, Gabriel’s inventor spirit took shape as he wrote a computer application to control samples on an Akai S900 in real-time with a joystick. And the inception for what later became Mixman had been born. Along with electronics whiz Jan Pannis, (Stockhausen’s tech-man) Gabriel and Pannis built an apparatus which converted beams of light coming up off the floor into a Midi Control device and the 20 year old Gabriel dressed in black, wearing white gloves performed his real-time beat-trigger device in the clubs of Amsterdam.

By 1993 Gabriel was doing high-end digital sound editing, design and production in Los Angeles, and finally found a business partner and the journey that was to become Mixman began.

SASHA & DIGWEED!! WHOO!!!

I saw these guys at Bonnaroo last year where they maintained an incredible energy for five straight hours. It was probably one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen in my life.

If there is only one show you see in the next six months, this should be it.

Sasha & Digweed @ Karma 04.09.08 1 Sasha & Digweed @ Karma 04.09.08 2

I am so excited to see these guys play again. It is super rare to see them touring around the U.S.

A description of their history from Wikipedia:

Sasha & John Digweed are a pair of DJs from the United Kingdom. John Digweed had been DJ-ing for ten years before getting a gig at Renaissance where he met Sasha, who had been working the past few years in various acid house clubs and raves. Together, he and Sasha honed their DJ skills, focusing on track selection and technical mixing abilities. In 1994, they released the triple CD mix album Renaissance: The Mix Collection on Renaissance Records. It contained many popular dance hits of the time from artist such as Leftfield, Fluke, and 2 Bad Mice as well as original productions and remixes from the duo themselves. Two years later, the duo became “true superstars” (AllMusic) with the release of their double CD Northern Exposure on mega-label Ministry of Sound. This release was brought to the United States the next year in a single CD package on Ultra Records. 1997 saw the release of the Northern Exposure 2 double CD mix album, again on Ministry of Sound. Sasha and Digweed toured internationally, helping define the sound of progressive house & trance music in the late ’90s. In 1998, both John Digweed and Sasha released separate mix albums on Boxed as part of the Global Underground series with Digweed’s GU 006: Sydney and Sasha’s GU 009: San Francisco release.

In the late ’90s, Digweed and Sasha took up residency at New York City’s famous Twilo nightclub as well as releasing their third edition in the Northern Exposure series: Northern Exposure: Expeditions. They both continued their success in the Global Underground series with Digweed’s GU 014: Hong Kong and Sasha’s GU 013: Ibiza. In addition to their residency, they toured the United States, especially to promote their DJ mix Communicate in 2000. Shortly thereafter, they embarked on their international Delta Heavy Tour in 2002. They have collaborated little since Delta Heavy. They appeared together at the 2007 Bonnaroo Music Festival, and counted down the new year during a 4 hour set in Los Angeles at Together As One. They’re set to perform at the 2008 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival as well.

In 2008 Sasha & Digweed announced their plans to do another tour of North America taking in 21 cities in one month.

And of course, a quick teaser video:
